How Often Should You Deep Clean a Home in South Florida?

Most cleaning advice online is written for a climate that isn't ours. A house in Ohio and a house in West Palm Beach do not get dirty the same way, and the biggest difference is moisture. South Florida sits above 70% humidity for most of the year, and that is exactly the condition mildew wants. Add sand tracked in from the beach, pollen that never really stops, and the salt film that settles on anything facing the water, and a schedule written for somewhere drier will leave you behind within a season.

Start with the bathrooms, because that's where the humidity shows first. Grout lines, the corners of the shower, the underside of the shower door track and the bead of caulk around the tub will show grey or pink within a few weeks if they're only wiped over. A weekly or bi-weekly routine clean keeps the surfaces presentable, but a proper deep clean — scrubbing the grout, descaling the glass, pulling and cleaning the drain cover — is worth doing every two to three months here. Anywhere else, twice a year would be fine.

The kitchen is next. Oven interiors, the range hood filter and the inside of the fridge don't care about humidity as much, but they do care about frequency of use, and most South Florida families cook a lot. Every three to four months is a good rhythm for the oven and hood; the fridge interior is worth doing every couple of months, especially in summer when produce turns faster.

Glass is the one people underestimate. Sliding doors onto a lanai, windows facing the pool, and lanai screens themselves pick up a film of sprinkler minerals, salt and pollen that a quick spray won't cut. Interior glass is fine every month or two; the exterior side of the sliding doors and the screens are worth a proper squeegee-and-brush clean every three months, and more often within a mile of the beach.

Floors, baseboards and fans are less about deep cleaning and more about not skipping them. Sand is abrasive — it dulls tile finish and scratches wood — so mopping edge to edge rather than just the traffic lane matters. Ceiling fans run nearly year-round here and collect a felt of dust on the leading edge of each blade; wiping them monthly stops that dust from being redistributed every time they spin up.

Closets and laundry rooms deserve a mention because they're where humidity does damage quietly. A closet that's packed tight doesn't breathe, and leather and fabric can develop a musty smell or mildew spots over a long wet summer. Once a year — ideally before hurricane season — is the time to empty the closet, clean the shelves and floor, sort what you no longer wear, and put things back with room for air to move.

So, a realistic South Florida schedule: a routine residential clean weekly or bi-weekly; bathrooms deep-cleaned every two to three months; oven, hood and fridge every three to four; exterior glass and screens quarterly; and a full seasonal reset — including the closets — once a year before the summer. A routine clean keeps the house looking good; the deep cleans are what keep it from slowly going backwards.
